Table Tennis ‘Next-Generation Ace’ Oh Jun-seong Wins Men’s Singles Championship

‘Next generation ace’ Oh Jun-seong (Mirae Asset Securities) won a gold medal at the 70th National Men’s and Women’s Table Tennis Championships.

Oh Jun-seong defeated Park Gyu-hyeon (Mirae Asset Securities) 3-1 (4-11 11-8 11-7 11-5) in the men’s singles final of the general division held at Gangneung Arena in Gangwon-do on the 17th.

Oh Jun-seong, born in 2006, became the youngest winner of the men’s general division of this competition.

In the final of the Korea Middle and High School Table Tennis Championships in November 2021,

Oh Jun-seong, then a third-year student at Daegwang Middle School,

defeated Park Gyu-hyeon, a first-year student at Shinban Information High School, to win the championship.

After Park Gyu-hyun and Oh Jun-seong joined Mirae Asset Securities in turn in 2022,

the two formed a doubles group.

Oh Jun-seong won a silver medal in the men’s team event at the Hangzhou Asian Games in October last year and became the youngest Asian Games medalist in Korean table tennis history.

In December, he defeated Park Gyu-hyun to win the 77th Shinhan SOL National Men’s and Women’s Table Tennis Championships.

Oh Jun-seong missed out on qualification for the World Table Tennis Championships in Busan in February after losing to Park Gyu-hyun,

but she performed well at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Champions Incheon held in March, reaching the round of 16.

Oh Jun-seong said, “I haven’t been able to play many games in Korea due to the recent international competition schedule,

but it was good to win a competition for the first time in a long time.”

He added, “I go into the game with the intention of learning from Park Kyu-hyun,

who is always a difficult opponent.
