Cristiano Ronaldo (Al Nasr), who is spending his final days in Saudi Arabia, has been awarded back wages he was owed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The global sports media outlet The Athletic UK reported on Monday (Aug. 18) that Ronaldo has received back wages and interest from Juventus after a legal battle.
“An Italian court has ordered Juventus to pay Ronaldo 9.7 million euros ($14.2 million) in back wages and interest,” the publication reported. Initially, Ronaldo’s camp argued that he was owed €19.5 million, according to the outlet. However, the arbitration tribunal found Ronaldo liable and cut the amount by about half.
Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer of 2018 and stayed until the summer of 2021. In his Juventus career, he scored 101 goals and provided 22 assists in 134 games. In the 2020-2021 season, he was the top scorer in Serie A with 29 league goals.
Ronaldo spent the COVID-19 pandemic at Juventus. At the time, he reached an agreement with the club to receive a portion of his missed weekly wages at a later date due to the pandemic.
Juventus released a statement on Sunday, noting that “the club will review the decision of the Italian Football Federation’s (FIGC) arbitration committee and acknowledges that there was no fraud on the part of the club in that this decision did not affect its willingness to agree to a reduction in Ronaldo’s compensation.”
“The club has been ordered to pay €9.7 million in accordance with its pre-contractual liability for failing to negotiate with the player.”
Several Juventus players agreed to receive four months of back wages in March 2020 and April 2021 as the club struggled financially. But there were also some individual player agreements.
According to the documents, Ronaldo agreed with Juventus to defer some of his wages. However, he never received the agreed upon amount of money.
Ronaldo’s initial demand was for €19.5 million (approximately $286 million). However, the FIGC arbitration committee recognized the negligence between the parties and 토토 awarded him more than €9.7 million, plus late interest and court costs.
The FIGC Board of Directors, composed of Gianluca Villa, Roberto Sacchi and Leandro Cantamesa, decided on the amount of money Juventus admitted to owing.
According to global accounting firm KPMG, Ronaldo’s net salary at Juventus was €31 million ($45.4 million).
Meanwhile, Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in the summer of 2021. However, following a falling out with manager Eric Mourinho, he mutually agreed to leave the club at the end of 2022.
Ronaldo immediately moved to Al Nasr in the Saudi Arabian Professional League. Ronaldo’s annual salary is reportedly around $200 million.
