Shin Yoo-bin (Korean Air) and Jeon Jeon-hee (Mirae Asset Securities) have won gold in the women’s doubles table tennis event at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
The pair defeated North Korea’s Cha Sooyoung and Park Soo Kyong 4-1 (11-6 11-4 10-12 12-10 11-3) in the women’s doubles final at the Gungsu Canal Sports Park Gymnasium in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, on 2 February.
In doing so, Shin Yubin-Jeon Hee became the first South Korean pair to win a gold medal in table tennis at the Asian Games in 21 years, following Suk Eun-mi-Eun-sil (women’s doubles) and Lee Chul-seung-Seung-min (men’s doubles) at the 2002 Busan Games.
In Doha 2006, Guangzhou 2010, Incheon 2014 and Jakarta-Palembang 2018, Korean table tennis finished with ‘no gold’.
It had been 33 years since the men’s team event at the 1990 Beijing Games that the two Koreas had met in an Asian Games table tennis final. Back then, South Korea defeated North Korea to win the title.
After winning bronze in the team event, mixed doubles and singles, Shin Yubin finally won gold in the fourth event, the women’s doubles.
Chinese-born Jeon Jeon-hee, who gained Korean citizenship in 2011, also won her first Asian Games gold medal in China.
It was the second doubles gold for the duo at a major tournament since the 2021 Doha Asian Championships.
The baseball team lost 0-4 to Chinese Taipei in their second Group B game at the Shaoxing Baseball and Softball Sports Centre 1.
The Chinese Taipei won two games to book the top spot in Group B, while Korea, with a 1-1 record, will have to settle for second place in the group and a spot in the Super Round.
Chinese Taipei will play Hong Kong, who have a 1-1 record, in their final group game on Wednesday, while Korea will take on Thailand, who have two losses.
The must-win loss to Chinese Taipei cast a dark cloud over South Korea’s hopes of winning a fourth consecutive Asian Games title.
Earlier in the day at the Hangzhou Qiantang Rollersports Centre, the Koreans won two silver medals in roller skating.
In the men’s speed 3,000 metres relay, Choi In-ho (Nonsan City Hall), Choi Kwang-ho (Daegu City Hall) and Chung Chul-won (Andong City Hall) clocked 4:05.702 to finish second, just 0.01 seconds behind Chinese Taipei’s 4:05.692.
The men’s team led until just before the finish line, when a chasing Taiwanese athlete stuck out his left foot, resulting in a 0.01-second deficit.
The South Korean athletes, who initially celebrated their gold medal with the Korean flag, could not hide their embarrassment when they realised they had finished second.
In the women’s speed 3,000 metres relay, Lee Seul (Daegu City Hall), Park Min-jung (Andong City Hall) and Lee Yerim (Cheongju City Hall) clocked 4:21.146 to take silver behind Chinese Taipei (4:19.447).
Canoeing also produced its first medal of the Games.
Jo Kwang-hee (Ulsan City Hall) and Jang Sang-won (Incheon City Hall) competed in the men’s two-seater 500m canoe sprint at the Fuyang Water Sports Centre in Hangzhou, finishing in a time of 1:37.690, behind China’s Butokai-Wang Chung-kang team (1:36.658).
Cho Kwang-hee, the 2014 Incheon and 2018 Jakarta-Palembang single-seater 200m champion, won silver in the two-seater 500m as the event was not held at the Games.
She will compete in the four-man 500m final on 3 March, where she will look to add to her medal tally.
Kim Min-gyu, who competed in the traditional Uzbek martial art of kurashi, won a silver medal in the men’s under-90kg category.
Kim lost to Sadegh Azarang (IRA) in the men’s under-90kg final at Hangzhou’s Xiaoshan Linfu Gymnasium on Sunday, but became the first Korean kurashi athlete to win an Asian Games silver medal.
Kurashi, who did not medal at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games when the event first became an Asian Games programme, won one silver and two bronze medals at the event.
In the men’s high jump, Woo Sang-hyuk (Yongin City Hall) 바카라사이트 cleared 2.15m in the qualifying round at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Main Stadium to reach the final.
Woo’s rival Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar) also made the final and the medal decider will take place on the afternoon of 4 April.
South Korea is third in the medal standings with 31 gold, 39 silver and 63 bronze medals.
Japan is second with 33 gold, 44 silver and 45 bronze medals. China tops the medal table with over 140 gold medals.
North Korea won gold in the women’s 59kg weightlifting event at the Hangzhou Xiaoshan Sports Centre earlier in the day, with Kim Il Kyong winning gold with a lift of 111kg, a snatch of 135kg and a total of 246kg.
Her lift of 111kg broke the previous world record of 110kg.
In the women’s 64kg event, Lim Eun-sim won with a total of 251kg, giving North Korea a clean sweep of the four women’s weightlifting gold medals at the Games.
